Background

The Belt and Road Initiative, unveiled by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, aims to promote regional connectivity, economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, and mutual learning among countries along two ancient economic corridors. An action plan, Vision and Actions on Jointly Building Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, was put forward in March 2015 by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Commerce. The initiative will be open to all countries and international and regional organisations. The plan calls for policy coordination, facilities connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bond through multilateral mechanisms and multilevel platforms.
