Convenor’s Message
Dear Members and Friends,

Welcome to the seventh issue of the Policy Research @ HKIAPS e-Newsletter. The fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong was fierce. Social activities came to a halt for a period of time. I hope you are all well. I also hope that Hong Kong will gradually gain momentum and become vibrant again.

At Policy Research @ HKIAPS, our team continued to hold our “Bay Area Experience: Evidence-based Policy Webinar Series” during this period. This series was launched in December 2021. It consists of nine webinars on important cross-disciplinary policy issues related to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), and is intended to provide a platform for scholars, policymakers, think tanks, other stakeholders, and the public to exchange views on the strategic development of the GBA.

The development of the GBA is a key policy of the Chinese Government’s National 14th Five-Year Plan. The vision is to leverage the advantages of cities in the GBA through cooperation and integration, and thus promote regional economic development. It covers multiple policy areas, such as innovation and technology, transportation and logistics, tourism, and youth development.

In addition to the webinar series, we published commentaries on the related topics to consolidate and broaden the discussion. These discussions contributed to a more comprehensive perspective of Hong Kong and the GBA’s future development.

The previous seven webinars were well received. Two more webinars are scheduled to be held through August 2022. Please join us on August 5 for the webinar on public space and August 28 for the webinar on children’s physical activities and health.

In this issue, we will highlight the research project – The Innovative Combination of Hong Kong’s Brand Strength and the Mainland’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology in Developing the Greater Bay Area as a Centre of High-quality Proprietary Chinese Dedicine. The competition in the Chinese medicine market has increased significantly since China began to broaden its contacts with the world. As a result, Hong Kong is facing great challenges in maintaining its intermediary role. Through in-depth interviews with senior professionals in the Chinese medicine industry, constraints on the development of Chinese medicine and ways of overcoming them were analyzed, and corresponding policy recommendations were provided.

Last but not least, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members who are joining this dynamic platform to extend the policy impact of their research on society. I hope to see you at our upcoming events and to work together on interdisciplinary exchanges on policy research in the future!
