General Information

The Department of Anatomical & Cellular Pathology combines teaching, research and clinical service at the Prince of Wales Hospital, a 1,400-bed teaching hospital of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Both clinical and basic research on human diseases are being carried out. With the large volumes of clinical materials encountered, research is conducted using state-of-the-art techniques in histology, immunohistochemistry, morphometry, flow cytometry, electron microscopy, molecular genetics, cytogenetics and cellular analysis. Regular clinicopathologic and research meetings are held and the Department was host to the International Congress of the International Academy of Pathology in 1994 and also organizes each year the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Hong Kong Division of the International Academy of Pathology. A multidisciplinary Cancer Centre was opened at the Hospital in 1995, where there are three floors of laboratories devoted to cancer research.

One can do research at the Department at different levels:

1. As a research student pursuing a Master of Philosophy (M Phil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.

2. For students enrolled for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) degrees at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, an optional research year leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medical Science.

3. As a Research Technician or Research Assistant funded by the University or various external research grants.

4. Honorary Research Associate for senior research collaborators who are not resident in the Department.

5. Visiting Research Fellows for scientists or scholars from China.
