CPTH1103 Chinese Language and Culture for Language Learners

Course description:

A knowledge-based course focusing on Chinese language and culture for language learners

This course is a 3-credit course designed for CUHK students (both local and international) who are interested in Chinese language & culture and learning Chinese as a second language (including Putonghua and Cantonese). The course will introduce Chinese language varieties and their relationship to Chinese culture, examine some theories and practices in teaching and learning Chinese as a second language as well as the importance of culture in learning Chinese as a second language and discuss some major discourses about language situations and cultures in Hong Kong and in Mainland context. Exercises, periodic tests, group discussions and presentations will be conducted in classroom.

Learning outcomes:

Students are expected to:
1. acquire some knowledge about Chinese language varieties and be aware of their relationship to Chinese culture.
2. be able to understand and discuss major discourses about language situations and related cultural issues in Hong Kong and in Mainland China.
3. be able to understand some foundation theories and practices in teaching and learning Chinese as a second language.

Learning activities:

The course combines lecturing, group exercises & presentations. Classroom lecturing includes: introducing Chinese language varieties and their relationship to Chinese culture, examining some theories and practices in teaching and learning Chinese as a second language, the importance of culture in learning Chinese as a second language and discussing some major discourses about language situations and culture in local Hong Kong context and in Mainland context. Exercises, periodic tests, group discussions and presentations will be conducted in classroom.

Assessments:

This course has the following components for assessment purposes:
(a) Evaluation of student performance (10%), which includes attendance, preparation and participation by students in lectures,
(b) Post-lecture quizzes (60%, 6 each for a total of 10 quizzes),
(c) Final essay/project (30%).
