Thinking Methodologically in Teaching and Learning Research: Research Designs in Qualitative Research

Abstract: A research design is a ‘plan of action’ to address a research goal. Since there are potentially infinite qualitative research designs, in this session we will not attempt to talk about every possible design! Instead, we will (1) collectively identify and question what information needs to be included in a ‘good’ research design, and (2) apply what we have learned from point (1) by critically analysing two research designs published in recent qualitative research journals. This workshop will introduce you to the complexities of designing qualitative research projects, in turn equipping you with a skillset you can apply to your own projects, no matter what research design you use. This is a highly interactive workshop that will involve group work. No prior knowledge is required – it is an introductory-level workshop.
