Attending the 26th International Political Science Association (IPSA) World Congress of Political Science
10–15 July 2021 | Online
Organized by the IPSA, The IPSA World Congress of Political Science is the preeminent international gathering of political scientists,
working in academia, research and consulting, who present their research over four days and over 500 panels.
It is held every two years.
Dr Kevin Wong (Research Associate, HKIAPS) was invited to give a presentation on “Outbreak of Hong Kong’s Anti-extradition Bill Protests in 2019” in the panel “Asia in World Politics”.
The paper was co-written by Dr Wong, Dr Victor Zheng and Ms Po-san Wan.
The research team aims to explain public support for the 2019 Hong Kong Anti-extradition bill movement which was the largest social movement since the handover,
when then continued for over a year.
The study was based on empirical analyses of probabilistic telephone surveys for which the target population is all adult residents of Hong Kong,
including a series of short monthly surveys and a long survey conducted at the end of 2019.
Results of statistical tests based on surveys conducted in the later stage of the movement showed that attitudes towards the force used by police against the protestors was an importantdeterminant of public support for the movement.
People more strongly supported the movement if they had a stronger disagreement over the level of force used by the police against protestors of the movement.■

APEC Study Centre Consortium 2021
6–7 July 2021 | Online
The Consortium was co-organized with APEC New Zealand.
It is believed that foreigners’ participation in local markets leads to an increase in product prices,
and thus hurts locals. By restricting outsiders/foreigners from participating in a market,
local people could therefore pay less for what they want.
However, Prof. Travis K. H. Ng found that restricting foreigners does not necessarily help locals, as it is thought.
For example, without foreign participation, even if the prices do not go up,
the producers do not have incentives to maintain the overall quality of their products.■
