New ‘Research Summit Series’ supports international development of faculty
The University has recently launched a ‘Research Summit Series’ as a new initiative to support the organisation of workshops catered to early career faculty members with a view to strengthening the development of its faculty members and the visibility and reputation of the University.
The inaugural research summit on Digital Methods and Social Development was organised by the Centre for Chinese Media and Comparative Communication Research (C-Centre), School of Journalism and Communication during 21-27 August 2016. The summit kicked off with a high-level public talk. Five keynote speakers from major universities, leading public-sector research units and global industry leaders shared their insights on the intersection between digital methods and social development. Besides, a six-day workshop was organised for 30 young scholars from 20 universities worldwide. A team of renowned scholars of new media and digital culture from Amsterdam, Milan and Hong Kong provided hands-on training on data mining, network analysis, and data visualisation by leading an intensive yet fruitful ‘data sprint’ on topics related to environmental initiative, labour advocacy, music social enterprise and the Hong Kong Legislative Council Election 2016. Research findings on the Legislative Council Election were reported by Ming Pao. The summit did not only raise the profile of CUHK, but also strengthened collaborative ties with researchers from around the world.
Under the new ‘Research Summit Series’, all faculties, departments and units are welcome to bid for funding of up to HK$250,000 for workshops to be held in 2016-17. The workshops should have a cutting-edge theme and provide engaging activities centering on networking and training to facilitate development of international connections. They should also cater to a small and elite group of early career faculty members and advanced PhD students from CUHK and abroad, preferably not more than 50 participants. Application is now open until 31 October 2016. Interested units please refer to the webpage for the programme guidelines and application form.
