From Mentorship to Internship
Have you ever thought of interning at your mentor’s
company? Well, I am one of the examples. I joined the
CUHK Mentorship Programme(CUMP) 2012 and was
matched as one of the mentees of Mr. Joseph Koc,
Director, Strategic Marketing of Jardine
OneSolution(JOS). And this summer, I
was given the opportunity to work in the
Human Resources Department of the
company.
During the internship, I coordinated
recruitment activities and assisted in
matters related to compensation and
benefits. I enjoyed working there. I
have learnt new things which were not
taught in classes. In addition, Mr. Koc
introduced me to his working partners and
subordinates. This has really broadened
my network and will be crucial to my future career.
Having such a good mentorship and internship experience,
I would say credit must go to CUMP. Having a strong
interest in marketing, I find myself fortunate to be assigned
as the mentee of a senior executive in the field. However,
A New Chapter for Mentorship
good matching does not work on its own. As mentees,
we should make efforts to maintain the relationship. As
an illustration, I meet my mentor every month to update
him about various matters. During the gatherings, he also
shares his stories and gives me advice.
Every meeting is an important lesson.
To conclude, it would be very beneficial
for university students to get a mentor.
And once you have got a mentor, make
sure that the mentorship goes well. Don’t
be shy nor wait for the mentor to arrange
meetings for you. Instead, you should
take the initiative to update him/her about
your recent activities. Email the mentor
when he/she is too busy for meetings.
After all, communication is of utmost
importance in a relationship. In this way,
I am sure you will make the most of the mentorship! Good
luck!

The Only Prerequisites for Turning Mentorship to Friendship
The mentorship is definitely an inspiring and rewarding
experience. I have enjoyed the meetings with my mentor,
given his exclusive global vision and expertise in the
business field.
There are nothing like tips or hints that build a heart-
to-heart bridge between your mentor and you, simply
because both your mentor's time and your efforts to
maintain a connection are the only prerequisites. Devoting
your efforts to constituting meaningful talks makes the
relationship an inspiring one for both your mentor and
you. It is also important that your mentor and you identify
common interests so that the mentorship will be relaxing
yet fruitful, and you two become friends.

ith the many mentorship programmes organized by the university, the question is probably not on the means to get
yourself a mentor, but how to make the most out of a mentorship opportunity. Jenny Tang and Sikie Lo, mentees
under the CUHK Mentorship Programme 2012, share with us their mentorship experience, and beyond.
