Courseware Development Grant Scheme (2017-18)
Call for Applications

Introduction

The Subcommittee on Education Technologies of the University’s IT Governance Committee has applied funding from the Teaching Development and Language Enhancement Grant (TDLEG) for the Courseware Development Grant Scheme (CDGS). The Subcommittee is now inviting applications from teaching staff members for projects funded under this allocation. The deadline of this call for applications is 28 February 2018. Proposals will be reviewed and selected internally within CUHK by a Review Committee appointed by the Subcommittee on Education Technologies of the IT Governance Committee (ITGC-SET). The result will be released in March 2018.

Applicants should also pay attention to the “eLearning Policy” (available at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/aqs/AQSHomepageIndex/e_learning.pdf), and in particular its Section 3 and its Section 5.

Aim

The aim of this CDGS is to encourage teachers to move forward from the basic use of eLearning towards developing more sophisticated or more complete eLearning environments for their students.

Project Scale

In view of this aim, applicants should devise proposed projects with a budget of around $50,000, with a maximum $100,000. Smaller projects will also be considered.

The allocated fund can be used to support staff cost (e.g., student helpers, TA, RA) and service cost (e.g., external vendors and services provided by CUHK units) in developing courseware/micro modules, purchasing software and/or hardware. Also, applicants should indicate whether the proposed project is funded by other sources.

Showcase examples of products supported by previous CDGS can be found in http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/eLearning/resources/showcase.htm. Grant awardees are encouraged to participate in the CUHK EXPO that is an annual event of the University, and examples of CDGS supported projects can be found in http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/eLearning/c_tnl/cdgs/ in which CDGS basic information, project final report, brief write-up of a summary and deliverables would be uploaded.

Application Procedure

An application form can be downloaded from the eLearning website: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/eLearning/cdgs/cdgsapply17.doc. Applicants should provide a title, a brief description of the project, a timeline, a clear evaluation plan and a budget estimated at an item level. Also, applicants should indicate whether the project is funded by other sources.

Completed application forms in MS Word should be sent through email to cdgs@cuhk.edu.hk, no later than 28 February 2018. Please do not send hardcopy applications.

Project requirements
  1. Grant recipients shall complete their projects as soon as possible and put the developed electronic courseware/micro modules or environments on the web for access by students within 12 months of the commencement date of the project.
  2. Evaluation is required for all projects. Advice and resources are available to assist grant recipients in developing an effective evaluation strategy. A project end final report (including a written report and a short video) and a brief write-up of a summary of the project are required, for which a template will be provided.
  3. The reports together with some of the project deliverables will be widely promoted across the University by various websites (e.g., the courseware development grant website, CLEAR’s website, and KEEP (https://keep.edu.hk)).
  4. Grant recipients may also be required to:
    • showcase the project deliverables to members of the University; and
    • take part in experience-sharing sessions.
Support and Consultation

Advice in preparing the proposal and estimating the budget is available through a support and consultation service, jointly provided by The Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research (CLEAR) and the Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC), by making an appointment at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/eLearning/c_services/scs/clinic.html. Teachers are also welcome to make use of the studios and the self-editing stations in the newly established Centre for eLearning Innovation and Technology (ELITE) located at the 6/F of Hui Yeung Shing Building to create/edit micro-modules. Details of ELITE can be found in http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/eLearning/c_tnl/ELITE.html.
