T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre Workstation

To commemorate six decades of heritage and development, the T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre (CLRC) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) established a Workstation at the CUHK Shanghai Centre in April 2026. The Workstation serves as an incubator for creative research in the humanities in Shanghai, fostering in-depth collaboration and exploring innovative paradigms in language studies. Its first academic event, “Linguistics+”, was successfully held from 15 to 22 July 2026.

Prof. TANG pointed out that the “+” in “Linguistics+” carries a double meaning. Pronounced as jiā in Chinese, it serves as a homophone for the word for “expert”, symbolizing the goal of the workshop of nurturing future experts in linguistic research. Simultaneously, representing the word for “add” or “increase”, it echoes the “+” (plus) in “Linguistics+”—signifying that the event will enhance the participants’ knowledge of linguistics.

“Linguistics+” received registrations from 43 students, who came from across the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, and overseas. Most of them were undergraduates, including freshmen, representing a diverse range of academic disciplines, such as Chinese Language and Literature, International Chinese Language Education, Chinese Ethnic Minority Languages and Literatures, English, Translation Studies, Philosophy, Accounting, Architecture, and Computer Science and Technology. Lectures were delivered by Prof. DENG Dun (CUHK), Prof. SUN Yenan (CUHK), Prof. HU Hai (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University), and Prof. ZHOU Peng (Zhejiang University), covering Chinese Syntax, Chinese Semantics, Computational Linguistics, and Child Language Acquisition. Over the eight-day event, under the expert guidance of the four instructors, the students engaged in a combination of lectures and seminars to study the four areas in depth. They found the event highly rewarding and expressed great satisfaction.

Building on the success of “Linguistics+”, CLRC will continue to organize more academic activities in the future to further advance linguistic research in the Chinese Mainland.
