Worldwide Universities Network Research Development Fund 2016

Internal application to the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) Research Development Fund (RDF) is now opened till 2 September 2016. RDF provides seed funds to kick-start research collaborations among WUN member universities under four Global Challenges, namely ‘Responding to Climate Change’, ‘Global Higher Education and Research’, ‘Public Health (Non-Communicable Disease)’, and ‘Understanding Cultures’. Proposals that address one or more of the Global Challenges and having relevance to one of WUN’s developing cross-cutting themes (i.e. economics, big data, and regional programmes in China and Africa) will be given higher priority.

TERMS OF AWARD

  • An award of up to £12,000 (£10,000 in average) will be offered by WUN to each selected project. An award from WUN will be matched by funding provided by CUHK (up to the value awarded by WUN and only for projects led by CUHK).
  • Awarded funding should be expended within 12 months (January to December 2017), with a possible extension for a further period of 6-12 months.
  • Awarded funding may cover the costs of exploratory research initiatives, targeted workshops, faculty exchanges, and the formation of collaborative networks, among other activities.  Where funds are to be used for air travel, only economy class fares are permissible.
  • Projects awarded are required to submit annual reports to WUN on an ongoing basis for the life of the project beyond the initial year of the grant.

APPLICATION

  • Application by the Principal Investigator is required only.
  • Applicants must hold full-time appointment at CUHK.
  • Complete the WUN RDF Concept Note and return it to the Office of Academic Links.
  • At this internal stage of application, applicants should indicate possible partners. The projects must involve at least three WUN member universities (including CUHK) spanning at least two countries. The project may include non-WUN universities but it must have an active core of WUN member universities.
  • Applications that incorporate a research mobility component for early career researchers and postgraduate students are encouraged.

REVIEW AND SELECTION

  • Applications will be reviewed internally and approved by the University prior to nomination to WUN. A maximum of three nominations will be submitted.
  • Once selected, the applicants will be invited to complete a detailed set of application (online) for submission to WUN by 28 October 2016.
  • Grants are offered to proposals which demonstrate potential to generate academic publications, policy impact, as well as to secure external funding in the long run. The results from WUN will be announced before 15 January 2017.

Faculty members interested in submitting an application are encouraged to contact the Office of Academic Links as soon as possible. For further information on the scheme and application form, please click here. For enquiries, please contact Ms. Yvonne Heung.
