Gathering migration researchers under CUHK Research Summit Series

Sponsored by the CUHK Research Summit Series and the Faculty of Social Science, the Research Centre on Migration and Mobility of the Department of Sociology organised a Summer Research Summit on ‘Frontiers of Migration Research’ during 17–22 July 2017 at CUHK. Six keynote speakers from Brown University, CUHK, University of California at Los Angeles, University of Oxford and University of Toronto gave addresses at the summit. The event attracted participation from some 30 advanced PhD students and early-career researchers from Hong Kong and all over the world, including Argentina, Australia, Germany, India, Japan, mainland China, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan and Thailand. The participants were also brought to a local non-governmental organisation to learn about migration issues in Hong Kong. Prof. Eric Fong, Chairman of the Department of Sociology, remarked, ‘Through connecting with the younger generation of researchers, we hope to build a research network on migration studies in Asia and demonstrate the University’s leadership in the field.’

The CUHK Research Summit Series was launched in 2016 to support the organisation of workshops catered to early-career faculty members with a view to strengthening the international connection of faculty members, and the visibility and reputation of the University. In 2016–17, five workshops engaging over 400 participants were organised.
