Summer 2017: Local and international students come together at CUHK

For many years, CUHK has been offering summer programmes that are both rewarding and stimulating for students. In the summer of 2017, three unique on-campus programmes were offered by the Office of Academic Links that rewarded knowledge, friendship, and an unforgettable experience to both CUHK and visiting students.

This year’s summer was kicked off with the CUHK International Summer School (ISS) July session, which welcomed 584 local and international students to the campus for an enriching 5-week summer adventure. While taking course work in various subject areas, students were exposed to a multi-cultural environment, strengthening their interpersonal skills and sense of respect for their peers from different cultural backgrounds. International students also enjoyed exploring the city and its unique culture in various activities which navigated through the modern and traditional aspects of Hong Kong’s cityscape and society. A 3-week ISS August session offered intensive Chinese language training and a series of cultural events and excursions around the city for over a hundred local and international students.

The CUHK Summer Institute (SI), specifically designed for secondary school students to prepare for university admission, was held during 12-27 July. More than 300 bright-minded students from Hong Kong, mainland China and overseas engaged in a series of activities to experience undergraduate campus life, including orientation and graduation camps, classes and residential experience.

Over 90 international undergraduate students were also at CUHK for the summer participating in the Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) from June to August 2017. They were guided by world-class researchers from CUHK to conduct research on a specific topic. Through the 8-week attachment, not only did they gain valuable insights on the topic itself, but also on research skills and teamwork. As a highlight of the programme, a poster session was organised to provide students with an opportunity to share and exchange views on their projects. The event is a significant milestone in the research journey of the students, who have developed a great sense of achievement in showcasing their research work to their supervisors and fellow peers.
