Commitment to the Future

CUHK trains and inspires its students to be forward-thinking, innovative and entrepreneurial. The University has been helping prospective founders of new businesses by offering consultancy, mentorship, space, tools, financial support and opportunities to turn their ideas into reality. A number of newly launched programmes at the University teach students advanced knowledge and imparts them with skills to create and innovate.

Rapid Flu Test Catches Gold at International Competition
​
A genetic engineering team of CUHK undergraduate students from different disciplines won the Gold medal at iGEM 2018 Giant Jamboree for developing a novel rapid test for influenza subtypes. The winning project distinguishes the type of influenza virus by detecting its RNA target sequence in just around 30 minutes.

National Competition Award for Raising Sustainability Awareness with Mushrooms

The “Mushroom for the Next” project raises sustainability awareness to the public through mushroom science and education. It won a Gold medal in the “Chuang Qing Chun” National Entrepreneurship Competition 2018. With funding from CUHK, the team established a social enterprise that promotes the consumption and local cultivation of mushrooms.

​Innovative Ideas from Young Entrepreneurs Stand Out from Local Peers

Sixteen teams from CUHK swept 18 awards in the “Challenge Cup” National Competition Hong Kong Regional Final–Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in 2018. The “An Efficient Assessment Tool for Child Speech Disorders Based on Intelligent Speech Technology” project grabbed the First-class Award and the Innovation Award in the Innovation category. The project aims to develop a user-friendly mobile application which can help parents identify speech sound disorders in children.

Another team received the First-class Award in Entrepreneurship Proposal in the Entrepreneurship category. “Treasure” is an all-in-one-pill management system which provides storage and automatic dispensing of pills. It can also input the dosage and frequency of medication by scanning prescription bags and giving reminders to patients.

​Cultivating Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Facilitating Start-ups​​

CUHK is committed to supporting its students and researchers to turn their dynamic ideas into reality. The CUHK Pre-incubation Centre (Pi Centre) offers working space, facilities and mentoring services to students starting companies.​

​A platform to facilitate the formation of start-up companies and foster collaboration between the academia and industry in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub (InnoHub) at the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute promotes entrepreneurship within the CUHK community and contributes to the development of strategic industries in the Greater Bay Area.​

Training Future Leaders of Innovation​​

CUHK launched the territory’s first university-wide Minor Programme in Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EPIN) in 2017-18. Open to CUHK undergraduate students from all disciplines, the programme is designed to nurture students’ creativity, and the ability to acquire key entrepreneurial attributes and manage the innovation process.​

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering has launched a new Bachelor of Engineering programme in Artificial Intelligence: Systems and Technologies for enrolment in 2019-20 to train students to develop cutting-edge AI solutions.
