Exchange Year (2004-2005)
University of Miami, USA

I joined the study abroad programme in the spring semester of 2005, studying at the University of Miami, United States. I have to say that the five months I spent in the United States has been one of the happiest times in my life, and my ways of thinking and expectations of my future have been influenced by my experience abroad. I really appreciate that The Chinese University of Hong Kong gave me such a great opportunity to create a new direction in my life.

As a science student, I didn't take too many major courses in Miami, since I wanted to spend more time to learn more about the local culture, and learn things we don't have at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. No matter what courses you take during your period of exchange, take time to meet friends and join different activities; you will get a rewarding experience. I made some very good friends during exchange; even though we were not from the same countries, we grew very close together, having dinner, going to parties, and traveling together.

I had the chance to get to know about different cultures, and learning to think from the perspective of another culture. Doing so has really taught me to think not only from my own stance, and that I should also be more considerate towards others.

During my time-off from classes, I traveled to more than 10 cities across the United States. Sometimes I even traveled by myself for a couple of days, living, eating, and finding the way to some interesting places on my own. This has really made me more independent, and helped me learn that everything is possible as long as you are willing to ask and try.

Looking back, my time on exchange seemed hard at the beginning. My advice for you is that the sooner you can adapt to the local life and meet some friends, the more joy you will have. Since your time abroad is limited, keep an open mind with a positive attitude, and try to make many new friends.
