United College Distinguished Visiting Scholar Public Lectures by Professor Qin Dahe

Professor Qin Dahe, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director, State Key Laboratory of Cryoshperic Sciences, visited United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 13 to 19 October as the College’s Distinguished Visiting Scholar in 2008-09.

During his visit to United College, Professor Qin has delivered 3 public lectures, 1 academic seminar and 1 night talk. The topics included “Global warming and socio-economic development of China in the 21st Century”, “Weather hazards in a changing climate and their relevance to China’s sustainability”, “The first Chinese at South Pole: Global warming from the perspective of polar exploration”, “Past, present, and future of IPCC” and “My South Pole exploration and academic life”. Professor Qin emphasized that facing the challenges of climate change and hazardous weather, research and innovation through international cooperation would play a very important role in enhancing China’s sustainability through maintaining a good balance among economic growth, societal development and environmental protection.
