Placement test for non-beginners

[Standard Chinese Level 1, for total beginners]

PTH 1133                Communication in Context I                                                       
An elementary course designed to familiarize students with basic vocabulary and grammar points through language tasks/activities and contextualized exercises.  Real life settings are introduced such as shopping, introducing family members, asking directions etc.

PTH 1153                 Basic Presentation Skills & Daily Situations I                  
This elementary course helps students to build up abilities in presenting basic ideas in real life communication settings.  Tasks like picture description, speaking topics and simple presentation will be adopted to train students in presentation with various everyday settings.

P-S1003 (Integrated course)       Putonghua for Beginners                          

This is an intensive course for non-native speakers of Chinese focusing on Putonghua oral skills and listening comprehension, with proficiency-oriented activities based on useful vocabulary items, daily expressions and a wide variety of patterns. It familiarizes students with the fundamental pronunciation in Putonghua through different activities. By the end of the course, students are expected to use Putonghua to solve daily problems in a limited way. Content: Hanyu Pinyin (Putonghua Phonetics). Speech topic related vocabulary, listening and conversation such as self introduction, number, time, money, directions & locations, shopping, food and activities

 

[Standard Chinese Level 2, for learners with less than 500 hours of study]

PTH  2233                Communication in Context II                                                      
An intermediate course designed to familiarize students with newly acquired vocabulary and grammar points through language tasks/activities and contextualized exercises in real life settings.

PTH  2253                Basic Presentation Skills & Daily Situations II                        
An intermediate course to help students improve their proficiency to communicate in authentic situations by integrating the newly acquired vocabulary items and grammar structures.

P-S2003 (Integrated course)       Communicative Putonghua I                              
An intermediate course for students of Putonghua who have mastered around 500 Chinese characters and basic grammar points, with emphasis on oral and aural proficiency. Students will improve their Putonghua pronunciation and communicative ability in using Putonghua through well designed tasks and familiarization with Pinyin.

 
[Standard Chinese Level 3, for learners with less than 1000 hours of study]

PTH 3353                Basic Presentation Skills & Daily Situations III                               
A higher intermediate course to help students further improve their proficiency to communicate in a variety of authentic situations by integrating the newly acquired vocabulary items and grammar structures.

P-S3003 (Integrated course)       Communicative Putonghua II                             
A continuation of P-S2003, building greater proficiency on that foundation at that level.

 
[Standard Chinese Level 4, for learners with more than 1000 hours of study]

 PTH 4433                Advanced Topical Conversation I                                             
An advanced course designed to enhance students' ability in communication on selected daily life topics such as clothing, food, work, vacation, illnesses, marriage, use of internet, life-style, etc.

 Note:

1. Students not taking level one language course will be invited for a written and/ or spoken placement test (www.cuhk.edu.hk/clc/placement.htm). According to placement result, students will be placed to a class suitable to them which may be different from the course/ level one had applied for.

2. Students are strongly encouraged not to study Cantonese and Putonghua at the same time unless one dialect is at least 2 levels higher than the others. Otherwise, language interference will be seriously experienced.
