CUHK CLEAR

Showcase 6: Learning by Engaging and Teaching (LET)

Introduction:

This project is a showcase of good practice in experiential learning by empowering science students in the development of specific knowledge, skills and values through training, engaging in various learning activities and self-reflection. Students participated in this project came from different departments and schools. After the training in Stage 1, they were engaged as teachers, assistants, leaders, lab demonstrators, etc., in various secondary schools in Hong Kong and Macau. The project team’s dedication is impressive. One of the principal supervisors, Prof. WY Poon, graciously donated the cash award of her UGC Teaching Award to set up the LET scholarship to support science students. Some students identified their future career directions during this LET project. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluations were conducted. The learning benefits of LET were evident from students’ positive feedback regarding the usefulness of the training programmes in helping them develop generic skills. The project demonstrates good practice in documentation by building up a sustainable and publicly accessible project website (www.cuhk.edu.hk/cpse/LET). This 3-phase project continued and was funded in 2015-16 as LETX (Learning by Engaging and Teaching Extension).
