CUHK CLEAR

Showcase 9: Enhancing IT Foundation Education with Micro-modules, Flipped Classroom, Learning by Teaching and Student-Centered Hands-on Workshops

Introduction:

The project is a showcase of good practice in using flipped classroom to enhance student learning. The project team developed 15 micro-modules to illustrate the key concepts of the IT Foundation course and uploaded them to YouTube during the project period of 2015-16. The eLearning courseware facilitated students’ self-learning effectively. Students were given the opportunities to develop their own micro-modules to put into practice what they learnt from the course. 664 video clips were then produced by students. By using these teacher-made and student-created micro-modules, flipped classroom was adopted in the IT Foundation course. Later, tailor-made hands-on IT workshops were offered to students to address individual learner needs. The eLearning materials were released to students and to the public online (https://engg1000.cse.cuhk.edu.hk). The project team also shared the micro-modules and teaching materials with the teachers of the IT Foundation course at our sister institution, the CUHK-Shenzhen.
