Following the success of a previous lecture series on Nathan Road,
the lecture series continued by exploring the historical legacy of Waterloo Road.
The topic of the lectures varied from business families that were once located on Waterloo Road,
to the history of a famous school. The lives of residents and the development of hospitals along the road were also discussed.
The first lecture was titled “ Anecdotes about the City”.
The lecture series was opened by Mr Kevin T. W. Sun, who elaborated about pre-war Chinese public dispensaries in Yaumati;
Prof Kam-keung Lee described Waterloo Road as “Heavenly Street” and explained its relationship with the Chi-fung Lam Family;
Dr Ching Hui examined the famous movie star Bruce Lee who lived on Waterloo Road and post-war development in Kowloon.
The second lecture showed how Waterloo Road represented Hong Kong as a city where East meets West.
Prof Siu-lun Wong marked 1979 as a milestone for the resumption of sovereignty,
he introduced two vital persons, Dingzhong Liu and Chengzhi Liao, who were based on Waterloo Road;
Dr Joseph S. P. Ting introduced J. P. Braga, who was a Leading Portuguese Merchant and his influence on the development of Central Kowloon in the early 20th Century;
Prof Nicholas L Chan unfolded the stories of the local Eurasian community and the Diocesan Boys’ School, with a focus on the Zimmern and Lowcock families.
