FAQ

What is the difference between a medical laboratory technologist and a pathologists' assistant?

A Pathologists‘ assistant in Hong Kong is someone who qualified as a medical laboratory technology already and has decided to specialise in anatomical pathology / histology by helping the pathologists in the handling of complex gross operative specimens. He/she is expected to be working in a medical laboratory in Hong Kong when taking this part-time program.

Can I do this part-time program if I am not a resident in Hong Kong?

No, we only accept applicants who are already working full time in a medical laboratory in Hong Kong and therefore possess residence status (of various kinds) of Hong Kong.

Is pathologist’s assistant a promotion rank?

We believe possession of this diploma will earmark a medical laboratory technologist as having specialized knowledge of gross specimens. We believe he/she will be in an advantageous position when being considered for the regular promotion ranks. There are active considerations currently by the authorities for a distinct rank.

Are there pathologists’ assistants elsewhere in the world?

Pathologists‘ assistant is a recognised profession in Canada, Singapore, and parts of USA and Australia. There are similar courses in universities in these countries.

Will doing this program enable me to be registered for medical laboratory technologists‘ registration?

No.
