Taste and Smell

Taste is a combination of gustatory sense and smell. The acuity of olfaction declines in the elderly people. Detection thresholds are increased by 50% by age 80, and recognition of familiar smells decreases by 15%. As a result there may be decreased enjoyment of food and an age-related difficulty in sorting taste of mixed or combined foods.
