Vice-Chancellor speaks at WUN Presidents Forum

Prof. Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, joined the Presidents Forum of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) held at the University of Western Australia in May 2018 to examine the role of higher education and research in international policy development and engagement, specifically in light of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, climate accords, and Belt and Road Initiative, just to name a few.

Prof. Tuan shared with an audience of approximately 100 university leaders, senior management, researchers and industry practitioners the importance of the Belt and Road Initiative as a regional action plan. He acknowledged that while the Belt and Road Initiative will bring many opportunities for economies and joint efforts in achieving sustainable development, it also poses a number of risks, including financial, social and environmental. He emphasised the responsibility and capability of universities to investigate these risks and to play a pivotal role in policy making. With their uniqueness and strengths, Hong Kong and CUHK can contribute to policy research that will mitigate the risks and maximise benefits for all.
