At Linguistics and Modern Languages, we cultivate an environment conducive to the study of language from multiple perspectives, and we offer programmes—both undergraduate and postgraduate—that better prepare our students for a multilingual and multicultural world. We are deeply interested in both the social and cognitive facets of language, and we work closely with various disciplines (such as philosophy, psychology, education, sociology, anthropology, engineering and computing science, among others) to investigate the mysteries of how language is structured in our human brain, how it is acquired in different settings, and how it is used for the purpose of meaningful communication.

多年來中央研究院數位典藏計畫執行成果豐碩，在研究領域享有盛名。以語料庫為例，已建構「現代漢語平衡語料庫」、「上古漢語語料庫」、「近代漢語語料庫」、「中文句法結構樹語料庫」、「中英雙語詞網」以及與元智大學合作建置「搜文解字」、「文國尋寶記」、「唐詩三百首」、「宋詞三百首」、「荔鏡姻，河洛源：閩南語第一名著《荔鏡記》多媒體教學」等網站。惟其資源雖然數量可觀、涵蓋範圍廣，但長期以來，著眼於學術研究需求，對於一般華語文教師及學生而言，使用上較為困難。一般師生雖然知道語料庫中蘊含著許多寶藏，卻仍然望而卻步。所以，為了讓更多人能親炙中央研究院的各項計畫成果，我們整合了部份上述的語料庫及延伸資源，設計出適合教師與學生使用的「全球華語文數位教與學資源中心」鄭錦全等。
