CUHK strengthens presence in APRU

CUHK recently joined the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), a consortium linking 50 leading research universities across the Americas, Asia, and Australasia to collaborate on effective solutions to the challenges of the 21st century. As a new member, CUHK has been actively engaging in its activities in an effort to strengthen its presence and connections. Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, took part in the APRU Asia-Pacific Women in Leadership (APWiL) Workshop themed ‘Accelerating Change in Gender Diversity and Inclusion’ at the University of Sydney in November to share her experience in promoting gender equality in the University. APWiL is a platform for the sharing of best practices in advancing the participation of women in academia and research. It aims to contribute to policy development in bridging the gender gap in higher education.

Prof. Cheung also represented CUHK in the inaugural APRU-APEC University Leaders’ Forum in Vietnam on 8 November 2017, joining a small group of university presidents, policymakers, and business leaders to discuss collaborations and policies to address the Fourth Industrial Revolution, particularly in the areas of data science and analytics, and artificial intelligence. The Forum, organised in partnership with the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training and Vietnam National University, Hanoi, formed part of the APEC CEO Summit 2017 this year.

APRU brings together the region’s experts to address the social, economic and environmental well-being of the Pacific Rim through regular conferences and workshops. Its areas of interest include Global Health, Multi-Hazards, Population Ageing, Sustainable Cities and Landscapes, Brain and Mind, Pacific Ocean, Digital Economy, and Women in Leadership, among others. CUHK faculty members interested in exploring collaboration with APRU should contact the Office of Academic Links.
