How can a sustainable and green campus be
established in CUHK?
The Campus Master Plan vision presents planning
precepts of making a sustainable campus, conversing
the landscape and places of value as well as building a
pedestrian friendly campus through different measures.
Through the planning of places for education and research
activities, new teaching facilities were developed near the
Central Campus and University Station. The Yasumoto
International Academic Park (YIA), Wu Ho Man Yuen
Building (WMY) and An Integrated Teaching Building (AIT)
are some good examples. They are planned near the MTR
station to provide easy access, and at the same time lower
the demand for shuttle bus services and reduce the resulting
carbon emission. In addition, with the collaboration of MTR,
a new University Station exit near YIA is built for students'
convenience.
To develop a pedestrian friendly campus, we hope to
improve the connectivity within the University so that it
is more convenient, comfortable and enjoyable to walk
through. This can also reduce the reliance on vehicular and
shuttle bus transport. Right now, the pedestrian network
begins from the University Station and connects to the
Central Campus through a series of escalators and steps,

What is the vision of the University Master
Plan?
The vision of the Master Plan is to enable the
University to be a good illustration of sustainable
development by balancing the enhancement of its campus
environment and the conservation of its natural heritage.
The Campus Development Office believes that it is
important to improve campus facilities as well as to conserve
its natural environment at the same time, because the latter
constitutes the heritage of the University which should be
preserved and passed on to future generation.

footpaths and bridges together with lift transportation
in the buildings. The natural landscape and trees are also
preserved as far as possible to complement the routes.
This network is further connected to the upper campus
of United College and New Asia College via lifts and link-
bridges. Recently, a new pedestrian route connecting the
Pommerenke Student Centre to the Engineering Buildings
and Central Campus is starting to take shape. A cycle
track is also constructed connecting University Station to
the future research hub at Area
39
; this can explore the
opportunities for a low-emission mode of transport by
cycling in part of the campus.
