CUHK and UC Berkeley team up on energy and environment forum

The 2016 Philomathia Forum on Energy and Environment – Cities and People: Responding to Global Warming was held at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) on 18 February 2016. Co-organised by CUHK and the Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute (BECI), and sponsored by the Philomathia Foundation, the event brought together leading researchers in climate, environment, and urban planning to explore the adaptation and mitigation strategies to the severe impacts of global warming in cities. Presenters at the Forum included Prof. Edward Ng, Yao Ling Sun Professor of Architecture; Prof. Gabriel Lau, Director of the Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability; Prof. REN Chao of the School of Architecture; and Prof. Steve Yim of the Department of Geography and Resource Management. Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor, and Dr. Nicholas Dirks, Chancellor of UC Berkeley were among the guests of the Forum.

During the visit to UC Berkeley, collaboration plans between the two universities were consolidated in two major areas: Climate Change, Urban Climate and Sustainable City; and Urban and Building Design relating to public health, quality living and ageing. The plans will be further solidified when Prof. Paul Wright, Director of BECI, and Dr. Graham Fleming, Campus Chief Scientist and Chancellor’s Principal for International Research Collaborations of UC Berkeley, visit CUHK in the coming months.
