Barbour, Ian, When Science Meets Religion (Group 23SP-1)
This is a famous title in the field of dialogue between science and religion (mainly Christianity). The author Ian Barbour (1923-2013), the winner of 1999 Templeton Prize, was a guru of the field. When Science Meets Religion can be said as a combined version of his two other classics, Issues in Science and Religion and Religion in an Age of Science, for beginners. In this book, students will see an overall picture of the academic field of dialogue between science and religion and will learn how to express ideas in a precise and concise manner.

This classic text, published around the middle of the 20th century, revolutionized the study of language and mind, and ushered in a new theory of language and cognitive psychology called transformational generative grammar. Through some illustrative examples, the book shows how certain traditional models of language are inherently inadequate for describing the structure of human language. While it is a small text (only around 120 pages), it contains the seminal ideas that challenge models of language based entirely on probability and predictability of word sequences. This classic text remains highly relevant to how we think about and evaluate the generative AI algorithms increasingly in vogue today. The book is accessible to anyone who has had high school mathematics and is interested in language, computers, human intelligence, and theory of knowledge.

“Can human survive on Earth in the next Century?”

The Nobel Peace Prize 2007 was awarded jointly to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the ex-Vice President of the USA Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change." Al Gore is the leading public advocator of the “man-made” climate crisis and has been endeavouring in convincing and urging various government institutions, politicians and private sectors, locally and internationally, to take immediate actions to reduce the release of anthropogenic green house gases which are proven to be the major cause triggering the global warming crisis. His campaigns take many forms, including the production of the Academy Award-winning documentary film named “An Inconvenient Truth” and a book of the same title. In his book, he provides a definitive account of how we have come to the understanding of the fundamental issues behind global warming as well as its impacts to human lives. He pictures in the book the future of the Earth planet would look like should human continues to ignore the warning signs and refuses to take mitigating measures. He also points out in the book how the crisis is related to the ethical problem, namely, Climate Injustice, over the world and call for international efforts to save the countries under threats.

This book could help readers reflect and react from global perspective on our own responsibilities and call for our actions to take care of the current state of our living environment, how we should live in peace with the nature sustainably. Students who read the book not only would learn about the facts and figures of the situation, but also connect the issues with their daily lives, reflect on their own living styles, renew their worldviews, values and visions on human’s existence on the Earth for the benefits of the current and the next generations to come.

Euthyphro is one of the most read early works of Plato. In this short dialogue, Socrates discusses with Euthyphro what piety is and how piety relates to justice. Their discussion alludes to the more general question on the unity of virtue.

What is a good life? Is a good life a virtuous life? What is a virtuous life? What is virtue? These questions are perennial questions about human existence in the cosmos. The ancient wisdom may shed light on how to conceive and shape a good life in the contemporary world.

-- Mr. IP Tat Leung 葉達良, Department of Philosophy

Predictions and forecasts surround us, from weather reports (will the typhoon pass us by?) to betting odds (will Tottenham Hotspur win the Premier League in 2023-24?*) to economic data (by how much will the GDP grow next year?). We make several predictions ourselves, and these impact the decisions we make. How good are we at making predictions? What makes some things easier to forecast than others? How can we update our predictions with what we learn? By considering examples from poker, earthquakes and chess among others, the author addresses these questions, with vital lessons for us all.

*Probably not, but here's hoping.

DNA: The Secret of Life 的作者沃森(James Watson)。

現在已很難找到What is Life? What is Life?

This is the classic work that demonstrates how our speech behavior is governed by implicit social/cognitive rules, much as the structure of our language is governed by grammatical rules. It is one of the earliest efforts to apply the insights of generative grammar to pragmatics (or the study of meaning in context). The book also presents a lot of Searle’s views on important topics in the philosophy of language, such as reference and proper names.

By reading the major chapters of the text closely, one will gain a deep appreciation of both language and philosophy, and the foundations of cognitive science.

Why we talk about warfare? Because the world has never been peaceful. Taking ancient China as an example, during dynastic transitions, there were always battles and conflicts. Even when the country was at its strongest, there were constant military activities. But because of this, ancient Chinese military studies were highly developed, and people especially value Sunzi the Art of War. Studying this book not only helps us understand the past and present, but also enhances our critical thinking abilities.

家庭中隱藏的祕密,留下難以抹去的傷痕;
組織裡盤踞的惡習,最後往往臭不可聞;
——American Journal of Sociology
