“Can human survive on Earth in the next Century?”
The Nobel Peace Prize 2007 was awarded jointly to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the ex-Vice President of the USA Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change." Al Gore is the leading public advocator of the “man-made” climate crisis and has been endeavouring in convincing and urging various government institutions, politicians and private sectors, locally and internationally, to take immediate actions to reduce the release of anthropogenic green house gases which are proven to be the major cause triggering the global warming crisis. His campaigns take many forms, including the production of the Academy Award-winning documentary film named “An Inconvenient Truth” and a book of the same title. In his book, he provides a definitive account of how we have come to the understanding of the fundamental issues behind global warming as well as its impacts to human lives. He pictures in the book the future of the Earth planet would look like should human continues to ignore the warning signs and refuses to take mitigating measures. He also points out in the book how the crisis is related to the ethical problem, namely, Climate Injustice, over the world and call for international efforts to save the countries under threats.
This book could help readers reflect and react from global perspective on our own responsibilities and call for our actions to take care of the current state of our living environment, how we should live in peace with the nature sustainably. Students who read the book not only would learn about the facts and figures of the situation, but also connect the issues with their daily lives, reflect on their own living styles, renew their worldviews, values and visions on human’s existence on the Earth for the benefits of the current and the next generations to come.
