International undergraduates explore the world of research at CUHK
The Office of Academic Links (OAL) has been hosting the Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) since 2014 as a platform to promote internationalisation by welcoming international students to undertake short-term research attachments at CUHK. In 2016, some 70 students from 30 overseas institutions participated in the programme to work with distinguished CUHK faculty members on research projects in a variety of disciplines including Arts, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science and Social Science.
Apart from engaging in research, the students also made use of the opportunity to expand their international network. Living on campus did not only allow them to develop a close friendship with their peers, but also to learn to appreciate different cultures from around the world. Besides, they explored diverse corners of Hong Kong and took part in a series of cultural immersion activities such as Dragon Boat Race Watching, Local City Life Experience Tour and Hong Kong Movie Night.
The programme concluded with a Poster Presentation Session, which was newly launched this year to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their research outcomes and celebrate their achievements.
Mr. Stefan Mbiyavanga from the University of Basel, who undertook a research project under the supervision of Prof. Julien Chaisse from the Faculty of Law, was one of the winners of the Best Poster Award. ‘My project was on international investment arbitration and corruption. Through my study, it is found that investment law is likely to have a substantial anti-corruption effect. Thus I’ve created a “Corruption-Model Clause” to serve as an innovative reference for investment treaty drafters.’ Stefan was thankful for having the valuable opportunity to delve into the world of research. ‘SURP has stimulated my research interest, given me an opportunity to apply new methodological approaches to do research and enabled me to further develop my academic writing skills. I’ve greatly benefited from Prof. Chaisse, who consistently provided brilliant inputs and constructive advice.’ Stefan will consider to pursue his postgraduate degree in CUHK in the future.
OAL will soon invite CUHK faculty members to host incoming undergraduates for next year’s SURP. Faculty members are encouraged to take part in the programme in order to promote CUHK’s research strengths and attract quality students from around the world to pursue postgraduate studies.
