Exploring Brunei Darussalam

Brunei Darussalam, meaning ‘The Abode of Peace’, is a country that many may know as an oil-rich sovereign state, but the country is much more than that. Ms. Priscilla Lam, a Year-3 Biomedical Engineering student, who took part in the exchange programme at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) in the summer of 2016 shared her eye-opening experience in Brunei.

‘I did not only learn various cultures through making friends with other international students and participating in cultural immersion activities, but I was also given the unique opportunity to experience the Bruneian and Islamic traditional cultures and languages in depth. I blended into the local way of living by staying in a long house with the local Malays to gain a better understanding of their food, religion and society.’ Priscilla recommends her fellow students who are planning to undertake exchange in Brunei to keep an open mind and respect others’ traditions and religions.

CUHK has partnerships with over 260 institutions from around the world to provide students with diverse exchange opportunities. Application for Outgoing Exchange Programmes 2017-18 will open in October 2016 with a series of promotional activities for students to enhance their understanding of the exchange programmes. The Office of Academic Links (OAL) will soon announce the application procedures and guidelines. Interested students should keep an eye out for updates on OAL’s website.
