PhD student pursues African migration research in Oxford through Postgraduate Student Mobility Scheme

CUHK offers abundant opportunities for research students to learn from eminent researchers worldwide. Since 2007, more than 200 awards have been given under the Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence and PhD Student Exchange Programme to support postgraduate students to undertake research attachments at selected partner institutions.

Ms. Lin Dan Linessa, a fourth-year PhD student from the Department of Anthropology of CUHK, was awarded to visit the International Migration Institute (IMI) at the University of Oxford (Oxford) from January to June 2015. Linessa’s research is about African migrants in China. During her stay at Oxford, she actively participated in various workshops and conferences. ‘I was greatly benefited from the visit as it allowed me to meet with scholars in the field in the UK. For example, my presentation at IMI seminar has led to a heated discussion on the comparison of lives of Africans in China and that of Chinese in Africa. The intellectual exchange has deepened my understanding on African diaspora and pushed me to think further for my study,’ Linessa said. She feels extremely privileged for having had the experience of working in such a stimulating environment.

In 2015-16, 37 CUHK PhD students and five visiting PhD students were awarded under the Postgraduate Student Mobility Schemes. To view the list of awardees, please click here.
