Straight
W
hat can make watching a
movie more interesting and
interactive than having a chance
to talk to someone from its origin?
The audiences of the four nights
of the Movie Screening Tours in
late January, showing films from
Taiwan, India, Myanmar and Zambia,
enjoyed such a privilege. In addition,
the flicks selected by the student speakers from these four
places were more than mere entertainment; they were
also believed to mirror certain aspects of their cultures,
as depicted by the students at the after-show sharing and
Q&A sessions. For example, the Bollywood blockbuster,
3 Idiots
, is a lighthearted yet enlightening melodrama
bringing India's education system and social values to
light. Mitul Goel (photo), the student speaker for the India
Night, said, "The Movie Night
was a great experience for
me as I had never ever
given that sort of speech
about my motherland. It
is really good to know that
the Office of Student Affairs,
with the help of the Student
Cultural Ambassadors, is trying to
promote such cultures at our university. I also felt that the
audience were enjoying the movie and also wanted to be
friends with me in no time. I have actually got two very
good friends because of that night." After watching
The
Lady
, the movie played at the Myanmar Night, a viewer
commented, "The film and the Myanmar student's sharing
gave me more detailed information about the country, like
its democratic development."
