Professor Sung and the I•CARE team for the walkathon
The dragon and lion dances wowed us all.
T
he year 2013 is a milestone for the Chinese University
of Hong Kong (CUHK) - it is celebrating its 50
th
anniversary! The series of celebrations throughout the
year started off with the 'CUHK 50
th
Anniversary Kick-off
Ceremony • Walkathon and Carnival' on January 27. At
the ceremony, Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor
and President, and Mr. Leung Ying Wai from the 50
th
Anniversary Celebration Organizing Committee urged
active participation of members of CUHK in the upcoming
activities. They also introduced the new programme
CU 50 · CARE, which aims to encourage you and me, as
individuals, to undertake 50 hours of voluntary service
within the jubilee year.
Following the ceremony, the wonderful dragon and lion
dance performances were met with a round of applause.
The dragon symbolising CUHK, accompanied by nine
lions representing the nine colleges, together with the
performers comprising of local, international, mainland,
undergraduate and postgraduate students, joined hands to
give a marvellous show.
After the performances, it’s time for us to stretch our legs
and get ready for the walkathon. To make this special
occasion even more meaningful, the walkathon was held
to raise funds for the I·CARE programmes. That was also
a good chance to accomplish our target of devoting 50
hours to voluntary work.
The carnival afterwards drew a perfect final curtain to
the whole event. There were music performances on
stage, game stalls, children Funland and folk arts booths.

Children, young adults, adults, as well as seniors had an
afternoon filled with laughter and cheers!
As a participant of the I·CARE team for the walkathon,
not only did I help raise money, but also made some new
friends and got to know how big and green the campus is.
That was a bonus to me!
