T
he mission of the Chinese University of Hong
Kong (CUHK) has been to combine tradition with
modernity, and to bring together China and the West.
To this end, much effort has been made to provide
international learning opportunities, including student
exchange programmes to its students. The first student
exchange programme was established with the University
of California system in 1965. The number of student
exchange partnerships increased dramatically in the
2000s, with new programmes set up in new destinations
in Asia, Europe, South Africa, and Latin America. Today,
the University has over 220 exchange programmes with
renowned institutions worldwide.
In 2012-13, about 810 CUHK undergraduate students,
representing approximately 24% of the annual cohort, are
taking part in bilateral student exchange programmes for

one term or one year. To further extend the opportunity to
more students, CUHK will increase term-time exchanges
so that 30% of each cohort of students may have an
opportunity to undertake a term-time exchange. The
University is also committed to increasing short-term
exchange opportunities through the colleges, faculties and
academic departments so that every student will have at
least one opportunity to go on exchange.
CUHK is also welcoming a similar number of incoming
exchange students in the current academic year. The
hosting of incoming exchange students creates a melting
pot of cultures on campus, and provides opportunities
for CUHK students to experience other cultures, improve
foreign language skills, as well as establish life-time
friendships and networks.
A record high of some 500 exchange students embarked on their studies at CUHK in the
first term of the 2012-13 academic year. Another 300 exchange students are joining CUHK
in the second term.
In 2007-08, former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lawrence J. Lau
and the senior management welcomed the incoming exchange
students at CUHK.
