A
t CW Chu College, a Service Team
comprising 11 local and non-local
students was formed in second term
of the 2012–13 academic year. The
Team launched its first project entitled
“Understanding Socially Disadvantaged
School Youths Through a Social Service
Endeavour (

)” which
was supported by the I-CARE
Service Projects Funding 2013.
In collaboration with Po Leung Kuk
C.W. Chu College (PLKCWC /

) , a local secondary
school with a large number of socio-
economically disadvantaged students
and academically low achievers,
the Project specifically addresses
the importance of understanding
the reality and dynamics of social
deprivation and value orientations through experiencing a
social service learning venture. At the implementation stage,
this Project also served the dual-purpose of developing CWC
students’ leadership skills and civic and social awareness, and
at the same time, building the secondary school participants’
confidence and learning strategies to mobilize their own
strengths. A total of 29 junior secondary students were recruited
in this Project.
Following a Pre-camp Workshop, a
3-Day-2-Night camp was organized
at Breakthrough Youth Village from
15 to 17 August. Activities included
mass games, rock climbing and
student sharing. On 21 September, all
participants paid a visit to CUHK as a
concluding activity of the Project.
“We are thankful to Professor Sek-
ying Chair, Ms Irene Ng, and Professor Suk-ying Wong for their
guidance,” expressed by a CWC Service Team member, “We
have grown, we have established friendship with and earned
valuable trust of the participants.”

What actually makes me touched is that they shared
their experience with heart and even with tears, which
can only occur among true and intimate friends. With
their trust and also with our efforts, I am glad to see that
a strong bond has been built between the two sides.

They had powerful stories to tell, stories distinct from
each other and special in their own ways. They have
surprised me by not just defying, but rising above all
stereotypes. Getting to know them has been a truly
humbling and eye-opening experience… Indeed, the
project has evolved to be more than a social service
endeavor. It is a sharing of courage and something
incredibly close to my heart.
