The workshop “Introduction to Seismic methods and instruments”, organized by the Earth and Environmental Sciences Programme (EESC), was launched in CUHK.
In response to the request from Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club College, Prof. YANG Hongfeng of Earth and Environmental Sciences Programme (EESC) organized a workshop “Introduction to Seismic methods and instruments” on November 25, 2023. More than fifty students from Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club College attended the workshop.

The workshop featured a lecture of introduction, indoor experiment and outdoor field demonstration covering various topics in seismology. Prof. YANG Hongfeng (楊宏峰)introduced EESC first, and then explained seismic methods and shared various cases of earthquakes in the lecture. An experimental test by stepping on the floor to measure the velocity of wave propagation was performed in the class. The students and teachers were actively participated in the experiment.

The field demonstration outdoor was arranged and run by the postgraduate students, with advisedly support from Prof. YANG Hongfeng. The geophone experiment was performed by the participants with assistance of our postdoctoral students and technician in New Asia Lawn.

The event provided a platform for secondary students to better understand Earth and Environmental Sciences Programme. At the end of the workshop, the student representatives and teachers from Hong Kong Chinese Women's Club College expressed gratitude for the support from the Earth and Environmental Sciences Programme, Faculty of Science, as well as extended thanks to all contributors and participants for their support, which contributed to the success of the workshop. They gave additional acknowledgment for Prof. YANG Hongfeng (楊宏峰), Mr. HU Yukai (胡虞鍇), Ms. DENG Di (鄧迪), Mr. ZI Jinping (資金平), Ms. JIANG Youjie (姜有杰) and Ms. LI Kawai (李嘉慧) for their remarkable help in the event.
