The Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) appointed on 22 April Professor Isabella Poon Wai-yin as Provost for a five-year term starting 23 April. Professor Poon, currently Acting Provost, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), and Wei Lun Professor of Statistics, succeeds Professor Alan Chan Kam-leung, who completed his term in December last year.

Professor Irwin King of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Professor Xing Guoliang of the Department of Information Engineering have been elected Fellows of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for the Class of 2024. Professor King is recognised for his contributions to the theory and applications of machine learning in social computing. Professor Xing is acknowledged for his contributions to embedded AI and mobile computing systems.

Thirteen research projects led by CUHK have received grants totalling over HK$69 million from the Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) 2024-25 by the Research Grants Council (RGC). Among them, eight projects have been awarded a Collaborative Research Project Grant, two received a Collaborative Research Equipment Grant and three secured a Young Collaborative Research Grant.

CUHK has placed 44th in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2024, a rise of 39 places from the previous year. Of special note is how CUHK received an overall score of 92.4, highlighting its significant progress in advancing the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The second “Walk for Excellence: Project E Walkathon” of Chung Chi College was held on 18 May 2024 at the Peak on Hong Kong Island. Professor Francis Chan and Professor Siew Ng from CU Medicine have been elected as Foreign Members of the Academia Europaea for their distinguished achievements in the advancement and propagation of excellence in scholarship in medicine, for the betterment of public health. Aisana Bassagarinova, a bright and ambitious Year 1 Science student, hailed from Kazakhstan has embarked on an inspiring journey at CUHK. She was drawn to the University’s global recognition, collegiate system, and sprawling campus, which direct all her efforts towards applying solely to CUHK.
