MPhil graduate 2014

In 2011, I came to CUHK to pursue my MPhil degree in Linguistics with an avid interest in bilingual language acquisition. How time flies! The Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and I have already been here for 3 years.

My MPhil study was full of laughter and some tears. Without possessing any training and background in formal linguistics, the first year was accompanied by anxiety and worries. However, things gradually changed. Through various foundation courses and seminars, I gained a solid understanding of generative grammar, phonology and language acquisition, and equipped myself with skills in analyzing linguistic data scientifically. It was an eye-opening experience which helped me appreciate the profundity and beauty of linguistics. By involving myself in the projects in the Childhood Bilingualism Research Center, I further developed my research ability in collecting data, constructing corpora and conducting experiments. This theoretical background and empirical training paved the way for my MPhil thesis project. As I am about to receive my MPhil degree, I look forward to embarking on my PhD study here. Thanks to the funding support from the department, I have presented my work at local and international conferences in Hong Kong and Singapore, which provided the opportunity for international exposure and broadened my horizons.

Apart from working on my research, I am very fortunate to have served as a Teaching Assistant for different courses over the past three years, from which I have gained rich classroom experience, and witnessed the amazing development of students in the department: when they first started, they knew very little about linguistics, but over time, they developed a deep understanding of different areas of linguistics as well as their own research topics. Like every one else, I will cherish the time I spent in this department, and explore my new life as a PhD student in the spirit of the department.

I am grateful to the professors and fellow students for their help and encouragement. It was their enthusiastic support and thought-provoking comments that spurred me on to refine my hypotheses and advance my knowledge. My special thanks go to my supervisor, Prof. Virginia Yip, who taught me how to do research systematically and scientifically and gave me guidance when I was lost. Most importantly, she made me appreciate the meaning, value and joy of doing research. Finally, Happy 10th Birthday to you, the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages!
