還記得在二零零四年九月，入讀了未曾在聯招開放日出現過, 連入學講座也沒有、新成立的語言學系，成為第一屆語言學本科生。當年很多同學就是因為一個簡單的原因----‘喜歡語言’而入讀語言學。大學一年級通識課時自我介紹，身邊很多其他系的同學、連授課教授也不禁好奇地問什麼是語言學。十年間，認識語言學的人越來越多, 大學的語言學入門課每年有超過一百個學生選修，經常聽到來自不同學系的學生說對語言學很感興趣。語言學系不再是當初那個只有十多個本科生的‘神秘’學系。
十年後，身邊的同學成為教師、空姐、編輯，甚至準備去參選區議員，而我則在語言學系度過了十個春秋：語言學可說得上是陪著我成長。本科生時什麼也不懂，從課程中認識到語言的多樣化、並它的複雜、系統和普遍性，令中學修讀理科的我對語言研究萌生興趣。本科生時的暑假有幸擔當學生研究助理，接觸到不同種類的語言學研究，包括漢語方言的音系學、漢語的語法化和雙語小孩的語言發展。這些經歷讓我愛上語言學研究，從而入讀了語言學的碩士及博士研究課程。在這段期間，參加了不少本地和海外的學術會議和研討會，讓我眼界大開，擴闊了自己的國際視野。在自己的學習歷程和研究工作中，遇過不少困難，但正是這些困難和教授們的指導令我日漸成長。還記得以前很害怕被教授 ‘批評’，現在倒覺得這是一個正面的學習過程，而每次的討論都會令人有所得著。
因為是研究生的緣故，所以也當了很多年助教。每次見到新一批語言學本科生，由一年級什麼也不懂，到三年級時在導修課雄辯滔滔，可以看得出語言學系對他們的改變：思考能力、分析能力、表達能力和自信的提升。儘管當年第一批本科畢業生已在各行各業發展，這十年來我們的飯聚中總會提到語言學，如：Chomsky 現在怎樣了? UG的發展現在如何? 中大的語言學系只是成立了短短十年，卻啟發了很多熱愛語言學的學生在不同的領域發展。願中大語言學系在以後的道路上，啟發更多的學生，讓越來越多的人認識語言學！

As a student of linguistics whose research focus is on bilingual language acquisition, perhaps I should now switch to English to make this article ‘bilingual’. The study on bilingual first language acquisition, which is generally referred to as the simultaneous acquisition of two languages, fascinates me tremendously because of my diverse language background: Wai Tau dialect and Cantonese are my native languages, Mandarin was the medium of instruction in my elementary education, and I’m also proficient in English and Spanish. More importantly, research on bilingual language acquisition provides important insights into language acquisition: how do bilingual children develop two grammars on the basis of limited and sometimes ambiguous language input? Under the supervision of Prof. Yip, I completed my MPhil thesis on the acquisition of Verb-Particle constructions in Cantonese-English bilingual children and was awarded the Outstanding MPhil Thesis by the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong in 2010. I presented my works in several international conferences in the Netherlands, Norway and Singapore. All of these motivated me to enter the PhD program in CUHK Linguistics to pursue more extensive study on bilingual language acquisition. Research can be very difficult sometimes, but ultimately all the interesting findings and new ideas one comes across will certainly be rewarding!
