When people around me first found that I got admitted to CUHK Linguistics, they unanimously asked ‘What do you want to be in the future?’, doubting my choice. Yet, I could assure you, that taking Linguistics is a decision that I will never regret.

To start off, although Linguistics is not about learning new languages, I was introduced to new ones as the department offers numerous courses in a wide range of modern languages. While some people might question the utility of studying the sound and language system of English, in terms of its structure, grammar and varied related issues in details, I have immensely benefited from the process of developing the skills to analyse a language systematically and critically. I have become more sensitive to language, from picking the mistakes in people’s speech to improving and polishing my own language use, both verbally and literally. In this modern communication-based world, having a remarkable command in language will undoubtedly equip you with the skill to stand out from the others, and studying Linguistics will endow you with this ability.

Most importantly, Linguistics has inspired me on my future path. I honestly could not foresee where Linguistics would lead to at first. However, as I took more courses and saw where my strength lay, I decided on the path to practice as a speech therapist. Although I could not say whether I will become a successful therapist, at least I have found my goal for life and have a clear direction to follow. Do not worry if you are not interested in speech therapy because you will eventually find that Linguistics is the key to many career paths, when you have laid a solid foundation and have an in-depth understanding of language use.

The Linguistics department here is smaller than other departments, yet it is a top-notch department with an excellent teaching team that makes a tremendous academic contribution to the field. These professionals do not only focus on academic advancement, they are also highly passionate and enthusiastic in teaching; they are eager to enlighten and inspire us and never hesitate to offer help when we are in doubt. Even though they are occupied with their own research, they are willing to spend their precious time on keeping track of how we are doing, giving us advice on future academic or career paths and being patient as always to answer our questions. The General Office staff also contribute immensely to our lovely department with their whole-hearted devotion to assist both students and the whole department. They are always readily available to help with impressive efficiency. Their warm smiles and friendliness give us the assurance that they are always there to help and support us, so that we may fulfill our plans and dreams and get the best out of our university life.

Words cannot fully express how blessed I feel to be a member of the Linguistics Department. Come and experience it yourself and you will see what I mean!
