Xu Bo
MPhil student

I am very fortunate to be a linguistics student at CUHK. When I first arrived as an MA student, the Department generously satisfied my curiosity by allowing us to take as many courses as we would like. As a result, I got to taste every sub-field of linguistics. And soon I found my passion in phonetics under Peggy's careful guidance. My years in the MPhil program were intense but rewarding. The faculty members taught me plenty about different aspects of language, as well as different aspects of research and life. I also learnt from many mistakes and setbacks, and grew as a person and a researcher. Fortunately, I was encouraged by a brilliant group of postgraduate students and a helpful staff team gathered by the department. My research skills were further sharpened when I worked for Peggy and Gloria as a research assistant. Research is never easy. It is not just about curiosity and passion, it is also about commitment, multitasking skills, and honesty. But most importantly, it is about working with people, sharing ideas and imaginations. I learned all these in this vibrant community. The people here helped me find a voice, to tell a story about language and about being human.
